Glock ambidextrous mag release: TROUBLE!

First, some advice from me, and it is free. If you are going to buy one of the new Glock SF (Short Frame) models think long and hard before settling for the new ambidextrous mag release design. I have heard that some are using it with no trouble. I have heard others having the same problem that I am, and even worse. Seems like the luck of the draw.

I have actually heard some folks stating that the mag release "assembly" or whatever, actually fell off of the gun.

Luckily, my problem is not that bad, but it is bad nonetheless. My problem is with the Glock G21 SF.

The problem I am having is this. At LEAST 50% of the time, when I push in the mag release on the left side (since I am right-handed) the magazine does release but the button stays depressed and does not spring back as it should. To be clear, the left button stays depressed while the right side is sticking way out. And it sticks like this. If, at this time, one sticks a new magazine in it falls right out, naturally.

One can unstick the sticky mag release by SLAMMING a new magazine in - this works sometimes. The more straightforward method is to push on the right mag release button and then mag release will "click" back into it's centered detente position.

I expect more from a Glock than a design such as this.

Any knowledgable folks are invited to give me free advice.

Seems my choices are to send the gun back to Glock and wait perhaps several months? Or maybe it is possible to find a local Glock-smith who is authorized to perform warranty work? Or possibly just trade the damned thing in on a model without the offending "feature."

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
gpond :rose:

This is just an opinion but there is no way I would own that gun even if they do fix it. Could not trust it for a carry gun no matter how long the mag release would work right after it was fixed. In a stress situation doing a mag change with the release sticking like that and you are taking a dirt:sleepy13: It would be on my mind forever.

If it was me, I would get it fixed and trade it out.

Never heard of that one before. Has there been discussion on glocktalk or any stories of Glock fixing the issue?

I've got a G21, G30, G36, and was going to pick up the SF's in .45 soon.

I did see a discussion on GlockTalk or one of the forums, but I can't get there from work. I will post the discussion later after I get home.

I really like the way the SF fits my hand, so I recommend that, just get one w/o the ambi mag release, imho.

I am aware that some of the Short Frame pistols are having problems. Not sure of what the cause is yet. I will attempt to do a bit of research...the most recurring problem I read about is the G30SF (45 ACP) not returning to battery.

My first thought would be to call Glock Customer Service and explain in detail what the problem is. Might be a simple fix. Glock has excellent customer service, btw.

If it is a design problem, an upgrade of some sort may be forthcoming. Glock may even send you another pistol to make it right.

I heartily agree, if ANY firearm does not function reliably, get it fixed or get rid of it.

For the record, I own and shoot the G17, G19, G20, G21, G22, G23, G24, G26, G27, G29, G30, G31, G32, G33, G34, G35, and G36.

OK, here is one conversation that I found on GlockTalk forum regarding this issue:

http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1020366

The guys who are actually having this issue seem to want to return to the non-ambi versions.

I just use my left thumb on the standard G19 mag release without any problem. Just as fast as using the right thumb.

I'm with ya. My G17 works fine no matter which thumb, too. Never had any problem like this with any of my other stuff.

So, what do you think about Glocks? You like them?:tongue_ma:

I know you've probably mentioned it, but do you shoot anything else besides Glocks? Just curious. Impressive collection with just the Glocks alone, BTW.:ok:
